Mount Philo isn’t the tallest mountain in Vermont. You won’t find ski trails or a lodge. If a strenuous hike is what you’re after, look elsewhere (unless you’re doing it in late December on sheer ice with no traction cleats on your boots – personal experience). But if you find yourself near where I grew up in Vermont, and you want to spend a couple hours outside with your kids or four-legged friend, it’s hard to do better than Mount Philo. You get enough exercise to feel like you did something, it’s a quick drive from Burlington, and the views-to-effort ratio is unparalleled.
Mount Philo is a reminder that bigger isn’t always better, and that hidden gems might just be sitting under your nose if you know where to look. I’m passionate about finding those hidden gems and helping others do the same.
